Okay, yes, I’m on a roll with this afternoon tea thing. (You know this already if you read my last two posts, which if you did not read you are a slacker. Click here or here to catch up.) But let’s face it. It’s hotter than hell in L.A. right now, which precludes the enjoyment of hot tea at 4 o’clock (and gives us something to bitch about).

So, I was thinking I’d go with iced tea for now. But I had to invent a gentle one, caffeine-free, or else I’d be up all night (which would give me one MORE thing to bitch about). I came up with a chamomile version, a tea-lemonade hybrid, full of mint. It’s guaranteed to make you feel refreshed and stop bitching so much.

Chamomile Mint Lemonade

4 chamomile tea bags
1 cup fresh mint leaves, lightly crushed
¼ cup honey
Juice of 2 lemons
Ice
Lemon slices for servi

1. Place the tea bags and the mint in a pitcher and add 4 cups boiling water. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Stir in the honey and lemon juice and refrigerate the tea for at least two hours or overnight.

2. Serve the tea over ice with lemon slices for garnish.

You wake up, do the treadmill while watching the TiVo-ed Hot In Cincinnati, shower, write for a couple hours, return fifteen emails, make a chicken sandwich, yell at the dog for eating half your sandwich, install a new bathroom fixture and congratulate yourself for doing so, purchase a head scratcher online, write six emails, yell at the dog for eating your sandal, go to the grocery store to return a furry cheese, and now it’s 4 p.m.. It’s time for a tea break.

I’ve become obsessed with the ritual of afternoon tea after a day of thrilling activity. If you read my last post, you will know that this is the second in a tea-themed series. (If you did not read my last post, you are a loser.) First, you got my Irish niece’s recipe for brown bread, and now she’s got me making Tea Bread, which is made with (as well as eaten with) tea.

This is sorta like the fruitcake my parents used to get and immediately re-gift at Christmas. (I don’t think those fruitcakes ever actually got eaten. They just kept moving from house to house until someone got fed up and threw them out.) But this is much better. You will not want to gift or re-gift, you will eat this. Think raisin cinnamon bread with a big fat upgrade.

P.S. Click here for a hot weather tea recipe: No-Bitchin’ Chamomile Mint Lemonade.

Siobhan’s Tea Bread

½ cup raisins

½ cup chopped dates

½ cup sweetened, dried cranberries

2 cups strong, cold Barry’s Gold tea (or other gigh quality tea—I used Twining’s English Breakfast)

2 cups all-purpose flour

½ cup sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

Butter for serving

1. The day before you bake the bread, place the raisins, dates and cranberries in a bowl and add the tea. Let the fruit soak overnight.

2. When you’re ready to bake, drain the fruit, reserving the tea. Preheat the oven to 375º. Lightly oil a standard loaf pan.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, soda and salt. Add the tea and mix just until the flour mixture is moistened, then fold in the fruit. Spoon the batter into the loaf pan and bake it for about 45-50 minutes, until a cake tester inserted in the middle of the loaf comes out clean.

4. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about a half an hour, then remove it from the pan and place it on a wire rack to cool completely. Serve with butter and tea.

The last time I had afternoon tea on a regular basis was when I shot a movie in London and the whole set came to a halt at precisely 4:00 p.m. so everyone could sit down, slurp tea, nibble cakes and discuss world affairs for twenty minutes. Then they’d leap to their feet again, all caffeinated and carbed, and briskly continue with the task at hand.

Yesterday, I had a tea break with a friend which revived my enthusiasm for the custom. I’d consulted with my niece who lives in Ireland, where they are so much more with it than we are, tea-wise. They are constantly rushing around baking things, then sitting down to eat them with tea in mid-afternoon, with the result that they are very rational people with good skin.

Siohaan gave me a couple recipes that are great for crabby cooks (very easy), unique, and also healthy-shmealthy, a far cry from the bangers-in-buns and gooey sweetcakes on the movie set tea cart. Try this one, for starters (there’ll be another one in my next post) with a little tea (Siohan likes Barry’s Gold brand) and conversation, and you will become as rational and good-skinned as the Irish. (Wll, maybe not overnight.)

B’s Brown Bread

1 ¼ cups whole wheat flour

¼ cup self-rising flour

¼ cup bran

¼ cup wheat germ

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

2 cups buttermilk

1 egg

Vegetable oil for the loaf pan

Butter and jam for serving

1. Preheat the oven to º350.

2. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk, then combine with the flour mixture. Lightly oil a standard loaf pan and spoon the batter into the pan.

3. Bake for about 45 minutes. Allow the bread to cool slightly, and serve warm with butter and jam.
